Kansai packs Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Kobe into a train network where nothing is more than an hour away. Once you are in the region, base yourself in Kyoto or Osaka and day-trip everywhere else: four to six days covers the essentials at a comfortable pace.

Getting around the region

Three rail systems overlap here: JR, Keihan and Hankyu. An ICOCA card (or any IC card) works on all of them, plus buses and metros. From Kansai International Airport, the Haruka express reaches Kyoto in 75 minutes and the Nankai line reaches Osaka’s Namba in 40. For unlimited travel on private lines, the Kansai Thru Pass usually beats the national JR Pass for a region-only stay.

How to split your days

Give Kyoto two to three days, starting with an early morning at Fushimi Inari. Nara is a half-day trip from either base: the Tōdai-ji Buddha and the deer park are 45 minutes from Kyoto Station. Keep evenings for Osaka’s Dōtonbori food streets.

Frequently asked questions

Is the JR Pass worth it for Kansai only?
Usually not. Regional passes such as the Kansai Thru Pass or JR West passes cost far less and cover the lines you will actually use.
Kyoto or Osaka as a base?
Kyoto for temples and quiet evenings, Osaka for nightlife and cheaper hotels. They are 15 minutes apart by shinkansen, 30 by local express.
