Fushimi Inari Shrine: hours, access and hiking the torii

Fushimi Inari is free, open 24 hours and two minutes from Inari Station, a 5-minute, 150-yen ride from Kyoto Station on the JR Nara line. The full loop up Mount Inari takes 2 to 3 hours; go before 8 am or after 5 pm to walk the torii tunnels without the crowds.

Getting there on the day

From Kyoto Station, take any local train on the JR Nara line to Inari Station; the shrine gate faces the exit. Coming from Gion or the eastern sights, the Keihan line to Fushimi-Inari Station is quicker. No tickets, no reservations: you walk straight in.

How far up should you hike?

The crowds thin out dramatically after the first 20 minutes. The best turnaround point is the Yotsutsuji intersection, roughly halfway up, with the only open view over the city.
